Before you purchase artificial turf, it is important to make sure that the artificial turf you choose is of high quality. Here are some key guidelines you should consider before buying it:
Total yarn weight: This refers to the weight of the yarn above the backing. It depends on factors such as the length of the yarn above the backing (pile height) and the distance between individual fiber tufts (density or tufting gauge).
Used in the tufting process to provide initial dimensional stability for the synthetic turf system, primary backing materials consist of a woven or nonwoven fabric in one or more layers. GTR Turf recommends a system with a double primary backing weighing at least 7 oz. per square meter.
The backing of synthetic turf is covered with secondary support materials to hold the fibers in place (tuft bonding). Several different coating materials are used, including polyurethane (PU) and latex. The coating must be applied with a weight and thickness configuration that depends on the system design and is capable of meeting or exceeding your minimum tuft bonding standard.
Artificial turf systems with infill and base materials should be designed to drain water in a manner that accommodates local weather conditions and precipitation patterns. Permeable artificial turf systems are typically designed to drain 25'' of water per hour.
The infill prevents the artificial turf installation from shifting and ensures even weight distribution to minimize expansion and contraction of the turf as temperatures change. Among the recommended infill materials for residential and commercial projects, it is suggested to choose washed silica sand in round, sub-round, or sub-angular shapes.
